 PE PLASTIC BOTTLES COLLECTED BY MIGROS GENEVA ARE TREATED AGAIN BY RECYCLING

Since Tuesday, April 18, 2017, Migros Geneva no longer sends plastic bottles PE to incinerate Cheneviers. PE plastics collected in our containers are now trucked to Grandson from RC-Plast SA.

It is important to know that this incineration lasted only a few months. Indeed, until the end of October 2016, the recovery of PE collected at Migros Geneva was handled by a rebreather. This company unfortunately did not wish to continue its collaboration, because of the difficult situation on the plastic waste market. While waiting to find a new recycling partner, Migros Geneva had to opt for a temporary solution by incinerating the PE bottles collected in its stores.

As the treatment of PE (polyethylene) plastic is not currently possible in the Canton of Geneva and the volumes of PE harvested by Migros Geneva are modest, we had previously thought that it was preferable to incinerate this PE temporarily. in Geneva. This is to avoid transporting these hollow bodies by truck to an approved recycler in another canton. All the more so because we do not have the space or the equipment to compact these plastics effectively.

This assessment was obviously not the right one, and we apologize to our customers and customers.

Since October 2016, the Migros Geneva cooperative has fully invested in finding another solution. Due to the difficult situation in this market and the volumes involved remain relatively low, the search for a new recycler has proved very complicated. A solution was finally found with RC-Plast SA. It is to this company, located in Grandson in the canton of Vaud, that Migros Geneva now routes by truck the PE plastics collected in its containers. Since April 18, 2017, the incineration process has been completed.

At the Migros Genève distribution center, work on the layout of our empty packaging return wharf is coming to an end. In the near future, we will be able to optimally handle PE compaction, which will enable us to reduce truck movements for the specific delivery of the EP to Grandson.
